Something to Hang on the Wall, close-up: soft black overpaint wearing through to blue on the recycled frame

Something to Hang on the Wall, 2026. Acrylic paint and acrylic pens. Framed, 68.5 × 91 cm. Recycled frame, soft black overpainted so it wears through to the blue underneath · 10% to charity.

This is my reaction to somebody saying at my first exhibition, which had only three paintings, that something was just something to hang on the wall. This is very dismissive of art. So I went through my photographs and saw this. As I was mulling over the sentence, I saw the picture, which was taken in Lesvos in Greece. I decided that this was something to hang on the wall equally, and so I painted this. It was just something to hang on the wall. It's from a photograph taken in Lesvos in Greece.

About the frames: my frames are mostly second-hand, rescued from charity shops and sometimes the rubbish pile. Small scratches, scuffs, fading and light damage are intentional: a nod to the past, and to the millions of images people have chosen to display in their homes to communicate who they are. The recycling may show. That's part of what makes each piece an original, and part of the story. Small print
