Running on Empty, photographed straight on

Running on Empty, 2025. Materials including oil pastel, acrylic, acrylic pens and coloured biro, with a lot of hand-applied 3D pen plastic, over a digital image. Framed, 28.5 × 33 cm. Recycled frame · 10% to charity.

I believe we're witnessing the end of petrol cars. I wanted to paint something about the old cars and the new things coming in, and greenhouses. It all kind of came together. There was a car in a greenhouse in Jersey I saw, and that inspired me. It was an old rally car, and I thought, yes, this car may never leave this greenhouse. It may for always be. It's just saying goodbye to old cars and the welcoming of the new electric age.

About the frames: my frames are mostly second-hand, rescued from charity shops and sometimes the rubbish pile. Small scratches, scuffs, fading and light damage are intentional: a nod to the past, and to the millions of images people have chosen to display in their homes to communicate who they are. The recycling may show. That's part of what makes each piece an original, and part of the story. Small print
