Neck Pain 2, 2025. Materials including oil pastel, biro, acrylic pens and acrylic paint. Framed 46.5 × 39 cm. Recycled 1960s frame with its original paint · 10% to charity.

Before my neck operation my hands hurt so much I could hardly paint. So I painted the pain. It was an expansion. The three paintings got bigger as the pain went on. I started with a small one, and when I was still in pain, I decided to paint each consecutive painting bigger. Neck Pain 1 is the smallest, and as I felt more confident in expressing the pain, I kept the self-portrait and developed it, painting it bigger. Second of three.

About the frames: my frames are mostly second-hand, rescued from charity shops and sometimes the rubbish pile. Small scratches, scuffs, fading and light damage are intentional: a nod to the past, and to the millions of images people have chosen to display in their homes to communicate who they are. The recycling may show. That's part of what makes each piece an original, and part of the story. Small print
