Cold Solitude, 2025. Materials including oil pastel, acrylic, acrylic pens, coloured biro and gold paint, with hand-applied 3D pen plastic, over a digital image from a photograph I took in March 2013. Framed, 50 × 57 cm. Recycled 1960s teak frame · 10% to charity.
I went for a walk in the snow in Jersey to photograph it. While I was photographing, there were no cars, no people outside. It was a different look at Jersey, and I felt like I was the only person seeing what I was seeing. That is the solitude. It was me just being on my own with a camera, and there being no people in the way of what I wanted to photograph because it was snowing. That was the moment I felt that without people, taking photographs of this place was easier. So that was the solitude.
About the frames: my frames are mostly second-hand, rescued from charity shops and sometimes the rubbish pile. Small scratches, scuffs, fading and light damage are intentional: a nod to the past, and to the millions of images people have chosen to display in their homes to communicate who they are. The recycling may show. That's part of what makes each piece an original, and part of the story. Small print
