The right to be free from Violence

A plain clothes security guard takes a call

Taken during the “Round Tel Aviv” cycle ride which had 20,000 riders.

There are 3 levels of security at events like this: armed semi military police, marked visible security guards and undercover plain clothes security operatives.

They are delivering the right to be free from Violence.

There is clearly a need for security measures as Tel Aviv to protect this right.

Being followed by plain clothes security still feels strange.

The right to a nationality

The right to a nationality

This road was the border between Israel and Jordan from 1948 till 1967.

After the “6 Days War” East Jerusalem became part of Israel.

The residents of East Jerusalem lived in the same place but in a different country.

The right to a Nationality is complicated.

The right to religious practises

The right to religious practices

This picture was taken in the meat market in Shuk Ha Carmel in the centre of Tel Aviv.

In the picture a kosher butcher is moving meat in a shopping trolley.

For meat to be Kosher it has to be slaughtered according to a religious ritual.

Some European countries are considering banning Kosher meat using the argument that the rights of animal welfare outweigh those of freedom to practice religion.

The right to health care.

The right to health care

In this picture an African refugee from Darfur, who appears to have both physical and mental health problems rearranges her clothing.

Many Darfur refugees are victims of horrific crimes this has mental health implications.

Limited resources are stretched to cope with the physical problems of refugees and mental health problems are often neglected.

The right to a language

The right to a language

In this picture there are 5 copies of the sacred Jewish Torah scripts (first 5 books of the bible) being carried through the streets of Tel Aviv.

It was taken during the Simchat Torah celebrations where the Torah is celebrated and people dance with the Torah in public.

The Torah is written in Hebrew which was a dead language until 1881-1921 during which years it was revived.

It is the right of every culture to have and use its own language.

Equal rights for disables people

Equal rights for disabled people

A man uses an electric wheelchair with a standing function to enable him to stand and watch the sunset at Gordon beach, Tel Aviv.

People with Disabilities have the same rights as everyone else, this includes the right to live independently and participate in the community.

Even the most severely disabled have the right to make decisions about their lives, get a job, and obtain an adequate standard of living and travel.

Employers have an obligation to adapt work and workplaces to ensure that persons with disabilities have the right to employment without discrimination.

The right to leisure time

The right to leisure time

Here the beach volleyball courts on Gordon Beach Tel Aviv are being used by people at night after work.

There is recognition that leisure time and leisure facilities constitute a right to be protected rather than a privilege to be earned or lost.

There is an obligation on the part of the government to provide leisure facilities for both adults and children.

The leisure rights of children are described as the right to play.

Paid holiday time for adults is also a right to be protected.

The health and social benefits of adequate leisure time for children and adults is significant enough for this to be considered a necassary human right.
